On 27th July Melbourne and Monash universities jointly hosted the Second Symposium on Catalonia in Australia. This event brought together, sixteen years after the first symposium promoted by Dr. Robert Archer, the main researchers and research students from Catalonia in this continent.
The Symposium hold at Melbourne University included a varied programme consisting of the following sessions: “Catalans abroad”, “Catalonia: Community, Commitment and Collective Action”, “Barcelona: the great enchantress” and “Catalan Literature: Classic and Contemporary”. We want to highlight the paper of our president, Victòria Gras, who introduced a little survey about the use of Catalan language in Melbourne and of Peter Gerrand who talked about The Catalan Footprint in Australia and recognize the research work of Josee Canals, member of Casal since its beginnings.
The event celebrated the resumption of the teaching of Catalan language and culture at an Australian University. More than and has been possible thanks to the enthusiastically work of professors Stewart King and Alfredo Expósito. The Symposium was supported by the Catalan Centre of Victoria and therefore by the “Secretaria d’Afers Exteriors de la Generalitat de Catalunya” (Catalan Government).
