The Catalan Cultural Centre of Victoria celebrates its 5th “Made in Catalonia” Film Festival in Melbourne. We hope to welcome you on the 14th of March 2014 at our special opening at the Cinema Nova with the screening of “Tots volem el millor per a ella” (We All Want What’s Best for Her) from a notable Catalan director Mar Coll, one of a growing list of successes to emerge from the Catalan Film School.

On the weekend, you can-not miss the awarded docudrama “La plaga” (The Plague), a film of intertwining stories that offers a moving portrait of life in the outskirts of Barcelona. We want to invite you as well to know the true story of Èric Bertran, a 14 year-old boy accused of terrorism after sending an email defending the Catalan language! You can find out what happened to him in “Fenix 1123″. However, if you care for exciting fiction, the chess-based thriller “Fill de Cain” (Son of Cain) should be on your list.

All films will be screened in Catalan or Spanish with English subtitles.

Synopsis
One year after suffering a horrible traffic accident, Geni is ready to resume her life… or at least that’s what her family wants to see.

The truth is that despite trying to please everyone, Geni feels unable to live up to expectations: her life before the accident no longer interests her. Why resume it then? The confusion that this creates causes her behaviour to become increasingly more erratic and leads to a single idea that begins to grow within her: escape.

Synopsis
Raul, a farmer who tries to grow organic food, hires Iurie to help him in the fields. Iure is a Moldavian wrestling fighter, who has to work at whatever it takes in order to earn a living. Slowly, their personal histories overlap with those of three solitary women: Maria, an elder who has to leave the country house where she has always lived to join a retirement home; Rose, a nurse from Philippines who has just arrived in the country; and Maribel, a prostitute who has fewer and fewer clients. The destinies of all these characters become entwined as the summer goes on.

The Plague is a film of interwoven stories that offers a moving portrait of life in the outskirts of Barcelona. The main characters are not actors. They play themselves, after four years of working with the director.

One night, thirty federal officers from the anti-terrorist unit in Madrid burst into his home and accuse him of cyber-terrorism. His crime? Sending an email to a chain of supermarkets requesting that their labelling should be in Catalan.
