The Casal Català de Victòria (Catalan Centre of Victoria)
is a meeting place for Catalan culture enthusiasts founded
in Melbourne
in 1986.
The Catalan word Casal is used to describe a centre which promotes
the language and culture of Catalan Countries (Països Catalans)
such as Catalonia, situated in Spain with Barcelona as its capital city.
Catalonia has produced many internationally famous artists such as
the painter Salvador Dalí, the architect Antoni Gaudí, the cellist Pau Casals, singers Victòria dels Àngels and Josep Carreras, and the celebrity chef Ferran Adrià.
The first Catalan immigrants came to Australia during the gold rush
of the 1850s; their descendants include a Lord Mayor of Melbourne,
Sir Stephen Morell, and the Parer cousins: aviation pioneer
Ray Parer
and cinematographer Damien Parer, whose documentary 'Kokoda Front Line' won Australia’s first Academy Award.
